As participants we sometimes resist experiential learning because we are not accustomed to challenging our personal boundaries or becoming vulnerable in the presence of co-workers. In fact, it is just these things that lead to the most growth. As adult learners, transfer of our learning experiences into practical skills we can use in the corporate environment takes place best if the learning is experiential.
I believe in the old adage,
“TELL ME AND I FORGET
SHOW ME AND I MAY REMEMBER
INVOLVE ME AND I WILL UNDERSTAND”
The positive attitude that we bring to the team-building exercise will determine how much benefit participants will derive from the experience. We may not have a choice about whether to participate or not, but the attitude we bring to the experience is our choice. If we choose to look at it as boring, then it becomes boring. If our intention is only to 'get through it', then that's exactly what we do.
I believe that there are three ways to approach a team building experience:
- YOU CAN BE A CLIMBER… Climbers will always look at experiences as opportunities for adventure and positive new learning. As a climber you will:
- seek challenges
- have a positive attitude
- allow yourself to be vulnerable
- allow yourself to be uncomfortable
- learn from your mistakes
- establish open and honest communication
- take risk
- be open to new learning
- practice thinking creatively
- YOU CAN BE A CAMPER… Campers will participate and go along with the group after they are comfortable. Campers will:
- participate but play it safe at first
- often fear failure but can be encouraged
- sit and wait for things to happen
- join in after others do first
- take the 'wait and see' attitude
- can be encouraged to be a climber
- will learn a lot when they are comfortable
- YOU CAN BE A QUITTER… Quitters will retreat and not go along with the experience no matter what. As a quitter you:
- are a pessimist
- will not learn because you won't give in
- believe that life is closed for you
- will get nothing out of the experience
- have strong preconceived opinions about things based on conjecture
- will usually resist and reject change in most situations
Think of those who you consider leaders in your personal, community and work environments. I believe they have the positive attitude to be a climber, and inspire those whom they lead. I believe the best way to get the most out of any team building experience is to consider it an adventure! Place yourself into the process completely, experience it all, and be determined to get the most out of it. Be a climber and encourage others to climb with you. The incredible work team you create may surprise you, and together you can be inspired to soar to success!
